Quotes from Sections 5 & 6

Quote:  "Whenever he found a weak one, a musulman as we called them, he would write his number down: good for the crematory." (Wiesel pg.76)

Analysis:  Ironic is a word to describe this quote.  Verbal Irony is the type of irony being used because the weak men were called "musulman" and they didn't have much muscle at all.

Quote:  " 'Me, too...me, too...!  They told me to stay behind in the camp.'  They had written down his number without his being aware of it."  (Wiesel pg.81)

Analysis:  I found this event extremely ironic because I was expecting Elie's dad to be one of the stronger men.  The type of irony is situational.  Obviously Elie wasn't expecting this outcome either because no one saw his father's name written down.

Quotes from Section 3

Quote: "For a part of a second I glimpsed my mother and my sisters moving away to the right.  Tzipora held Mother's hand.  I saw them disappear into the distance; my mother was stroking my sister's fair hair, as though to protect her, while I walked on with my father and the other men.  And I did not know that in that place, at that moment, I was parting from my mother and Tzipora forever." (Wiesel pg.38-39)

Analysis: Strength is one word to describe Elie's mother's character.  She seems to be so strong willed for Tzipora by making her feel some what comfortable and safe.  I can tell that Elie's mother was very frightened, but she put on a strong face for her family.

Quote: "Akiba Drumer said: 'God is testing us.  He wants to find out whether we can dominate our base instincts and kill the Satan within us.  We have no right to despair.  And if he punishes us relentlessly, it's a sign that He loves us all the more.' " (Wiesel pg.53)

Analysis: The lines I chose are a representation of the message I think the author is trying to get across.  The message is to keep your faith, be strong, and never give up because the future may not look bright now, but the best comes to people who trust in God.

Quotes from Sections 1 & 2

Quote: " 'Well, there you are, you see!  What did we tell you?  You wouldn't believe us.  There they are your Germans!  What do you think of them?  Where is their famous cruelty?' " (Wiesel pg.19)

Analysis: In my opinion people in the town are acting as if the Germans coming in is okay.  These statements are foreshadowing an event in the near future that will cause misery.  It is also ironic that the people believe that everything is okay, but then it turned for the worst and the Jews were sent to camps.

Quote: "I looked at my little sister Tziora, her fair hair well combed, a red coat over her arm, a little girl of seven.  The bundle on her back was too heavy for her.  She gritted her teeth.  She knew by now that it would be useless to complain." (Wiesel pg.28)

Analysis: These few lines prove how cruel the soldiers were.  It makes me extremely sad knowing that so many people suffered.  This situation relates to "The Scarlet Ibis" we read because the soldiers are acting like Doodle's older brother by pushing the little girl too hard.  If the soldiers continue the madness and cruelty the weaker people will die.
